Commission on Integration and Cohesion

The Commission on Integration and Cohesion was officially announced on 28 June 2006 in the United Kingdom, by the then Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Ruth Kelly. It consisted of a fixed-term consultative council, and was implemented on the basis of the acknowledgement that municipalities could benefit at various levels from the increasing diversity present at a local level, as well as, on the other hand, helping to find more adequate responses to the potential tensions that diversity can create.

The functions of the Commission on Integration and Cohesion were to promote capacity-building among the communities themselves through activities in the field so that they themselves could prevent and manage those tensions in the future. The Commission was chaired by Darra Singh, Chief Executive of Ealing Council, and the work of the Commission was an exhaustive process of consultation with various organisations and individuals working in the area, visits to regional organisations and research studies, as well as the involvement of various stakeholders who drew up practical recommendations on the theme.
