Danish Council for Ethnic Minorities?

The Council for Ethnic Minorities, under the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs, was founded in 1999. It consists of 14 members with ethnic minority backgrounds. The members are selected through a process of election by delegates from the Municipal Councils of Integration throughout the country, and have a four-year term. The role of the Council of Ethnic Minorities is to advise the Minister of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs on issues of relevance to refugees and immigrants in Denmark. To this end, the Council meets with the Minister every three months. The Minister may also request specific statements from the Council in relation to relevant issues.

The Council itself meets around once a month. It also engages in various activities such as visiting the local Councils of Integration (2005), a common election campaign for integration councils (2006), five regional dialogue conferences (2007) and cooperation with the Council for Voluntary Social Work to involve ethnic minorities in their activities. In 2008, the Council undertook a project to empower the local Councils of Integration.

Within the Integration Act are provisions for municipal governments to establish Councils of Integration. These local councils contribute to shaping municipal integration policies and new initiatives, and must consist of a minimum of seven members with residence in the municipality. Women are specifically encouraged to take part in local Councils of Integration.

The members of the Council for Ethnic Minorities regularly undertake speaking engagements at conferences, seminars and briefings. The Council for Ethnic Minorities produces an annual report with an overview of their work and the participation of members on various committees.
